These small trees are found in the north, from Opuwo to Etosha. The leaves are bitter and distastful to most grazers. The plants are hosts to a scale insect, which exudes a sweet substance, much relished by local children and called 'Himba sweets'. The very dense and hard red wood is useful for its termite resistance.
