This directory is reproduced from "The Wireless World" pp.325-331, August 20th., 1921. The data contained is compiled from returns sent to 'The Wireless World', not from official sources. In the early days after the great war calls in the 2xx series were issued, apparently in alphabetical order, except that V. Watson has been issued '2VW'. Lapsed calls were apparently re-issued very quickly, as there are several examples in this directory which had different holders by 1925 or so. Examples among the cards I have scanned include :-
2DZ, held by F. Haynes in 1921 and Basil Hall in 1925,
2HP, H.C. Woodhall, 1921 and C.R. Waterer, 1927,
2IL, 3rd. Altrincham Scouts, 1921 and H.R. Goodall, 1926.
The 2Ex series calls were not issued to experimental wireless stations.
Of those declaring power outputs only two stations were using, or possibly licenced for, more than the standard 10W. Nine out of ten stations were working C.W. and a surprising two thirds telephony and spark. One tenth were using a mode called 'tonic train'. This was keyed C.W. modulated with an audio tone, which had the advantage, shared with telephony and spark, of being resolvable on a crystal set or a broadcast receiver without a local oscillator or the rebroadcasting danger associated with oscillatory regeneration.
